2018-2019 Student Handbook 25 Ethnic and Minority Initiatives Urban Initiatives The Urban Initiatives exist to serve Denver Seminary students who come from an African-American background. We facilitate activities, events, courses, discussion groups, media productions and seminars that will assist them in fulfilling their goals and objectives in ministry. Hispanic Initiatives Hispanic Initiatives The Hispanic Initiatives serves Denver Seminary and the Hispanic community by providing access and support to pursue theological education. It also provides opportunities to students of other ethnic groups to become culturally effective while ministering in the Hispanic culture. The Hispanic Initiative includes the following programs: A certificate of completion in Hispanic Studies. The IDEAL Institute (The Institute for the Development and Training of Leaders). Oasis (Training Female Leaders for the Hispanic Church). Worship Leaders“ Program. Friends of IDEAL (building the future of the Hispanic Church). Asian Initiative The Asian Initiative aims to develop pastoral and lay leadership among Asian Christians in metro Denver by offering opportunities for pastors and lay leaders to be equipped thoroughly to serve the Lord's Kingdom and church more effectively. Common Ground: The Chapel Gatherings of Denver Seminary Common Ground chapel services are held weekly during the fall and spring semesters. These community gatherings focus on worship but also include lectures and special conferences, as well as speakers from within the Denver Seminary community, the Denver area, and from around the world. During these gatherings faculty, staff, students, and guests converge to demonstrate the importance of unity by worshiping, learning, and praying together. More information about Common Ground, including current and archived schedules, can be found on the Common Ground Chapel webpage. Attendance Requirements Each student pursuing an MDiv or MA degree must attend chapel as part of their program; however, the attendance requirement is different for these two programs, and students are responsible for understanding and fulfilling the expectation for their respective degree. (Students in the DMin or ThM programs and those seeking a certificate or who are auditing do not have a chapel attendance requirement but are welcome to participate as their schedules allow.) Students are responsible for managing their attendance and selecting which semesters they would like to attend, so long as the attendance requirement is completed by their graduation date. In the event that a student is dually enrolled in an MA and MDiv program, the higher requirement (five semesters) applies. MDiv Chapel Attendance Requirement Students in the Master of Divinity program are required to attend 5 semesters of Common Ground chapel services. (Attending 10 services during a semester fulfills the requirement for one semester.)
