you respect the other person immensely it helps you to slow down, listen, and consider that, at times, they might have more insight than you. Second, deference. If you respect someone and their opinions, it is easier to defer to them in the decision-making process. Third, a shared vision for the church. We have always enjoyed a common vision for the primacy of the local church in God's plan for the world. IDEA TURNED CALLING Steve and Reed Jolly know the hard work that goes into planting and pastoring a church. It's not for the fainthearted nor those with just a good idea. God's calling must drive you to "plod on" year after year. "Truth be told," said Reed, "we are not very strategic thinkers. I heard a poet say once, 'I put words down on the page and let them play together.' Our strategy has been to teach the Bible faithfully, let the people of God absorb that teaching, and let them play together. Out of that has come lots of great ministry, changed lives, saved marriages, adopted children, and global missions. I don't mean this to sound spectacular. We are just another church. That is our greatest strength." ENGAGE 19 Steve and Reed Jolley MDIV GRADUATES Steve and Reed Jolley, both Denver Seminary MDiv graduates from the late 1970s, are the church-planting founders of Santa Barbara Community Church, a multi- generational, evangelistic, Bible-centered church of approximately 2,000 believers. They enjoy raising their families—their wives, children, and grandchildren—in a place where they can surf, play tennis, hike, and pursue the Lord together.
