88 CF 613 Christian Formation Retreat Experience This course provides the opportunity for students to construct or choose a retreat experience that will deepen their ongoing formation into Christlikeness. It is structured in a learning plan format, requiring independent and self-directed learning, in which the student, under faculty guidance, identifies appropriate readings, practices, and places for their retreat. One hour. CF 630 Theological Tensions and Spiritual Formation: Historical Studies Examines several core theological conflicts in Christian history that are of particular relevance to Christian spirituality. The historical contexts of the questions, the key thinkers and leaders, and the discourse and resolutions will be explored. Each development is then considered in light of the spiritual formation that issued out of the different positions in the conflict. These positions will be viewed as voices that shape spiritual formation, with a view toward better understanding directors' and directees' spiritual assumptions and positions. Two hours. CF 640 Following Christ in the Monastic Tradition Encourages students to develop deeper patterns and disciplines of spiritual formation by learning from the history and practices of Christian monasticism. Students will be invited to consider how an understanding of the religious life can inform, inspire, and reshape their own life of discipleship. A focus on engaging with original monastic writers and sources, especially the Conferences of John Cassian, is included. Offered summer session, even years. Two hours. CF 590, 690 Studies in Christian Formation and Soul Care These course numbers are reserved for courses of special or one-time interest that do not otherwise appear in the catalog. Two or three hours. CF 591, 691 Individualized Study in Christian Formation and Soul Care These course numbers are reserved for courses that are designed to free the student for independent investigation in Christian Formation and Soul Care under the guidance of a professor. One to three hours. CF 790 Summative Project in Christian Formation and Soul Care This capstone course for MA in Christian Formation and Soul Care students provides a review and integration of the theological, psychological, vocational, and spiritual journey dimensions of students' formation during seminary. It includes a summative project of a major research paper on a topic of Christian formation or an applied ministry experience in soul care. Two hours. HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY Building upon the biblical foundation of the faith, this department acquaints students with the development of Christianity from its inception to the present. By studying the past, prospective ministers understand in depth both the message they are to preach and the mission they are to fulfill. By using guided readings in original sources, doing assigned research, and integrating lectures and discussions, students gain an overview of Christianity's expansion, teachings and witness, learn to formulate Christian doctrine accurately, and deepen their appreciation for historic Christianity.
