Denver Seminary Faculty Contribute to NIV Zondervan Study Bible In August 2015, Zondervan released the NIV Zondervan Study Bible, led by general editor Dr. D.A. Carson with a team of more than 60 biblical scholars, including three from Denver Seminary. Dr. Richard S. Hess, Earl S. Kalland Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages, served on the team as associate editor. He read and edited the biblical theology content of the entire manuscript. Dr. Hess also edited the Bible background content and the archaeology details, as well as illustrations, maps, and charts. He authored the notes on Genesis 1–11, Joshua, and the Song of Songs, and wrote the "Introduction to the Historical Books" and "Introduction to the Prophetic Books." Additionally, Dr. Craig Blomberg, Distinguished Professor of New Testament, authored the notes for the Gospel of Matthew. Dr. M. Daniel Carroll R., Distinguished Professor of Old Testament, authored the notes for the book of Amos. Drs. Blomberg and Hess sit on the NIV Committee for Bible Translation, which is responsible for the NIV translation itself. The uniqueness of the NIV Zondervan Study Bible lies in its focus on biblical theology. Dr. Hess comments, "Our Christian faith and life are based upon the Bible and its message. When we study the whole Bible and engage with what it teaches and what it emphasizes, we are studying and living biblical theology. Through the exceptional participation of Denver Seminary Bible professors in this project, God has enabled our seminary to assist in bringing a better understanding of the Bible to the worldwide Christian church." The new study Bible unpacks God's story through nearly 20,000 verse-by- verse study notes. It provides more than 60 charts and 90 maps, along with a comprehensive library of 28 articles by award-winning scholars. Congratulations to Drs. Hess, Blomberg, and Carroll and all those involved with the new NIV Zondervan Study Bible. Each year the Institute addresses topics of social significance through several events hosted on and around campus. Our country continues to experience brokenness in regard to race relationships, and this has become a timely and significant issue for our culture. To address these issues, VGI has chosen "Confronting the Ongoing Legacy of Racism: The Challenge to Christian Faith" as its theme for the 2015–2016 academic year. Throughout the year, the theme will be fleshed out historically, biblically and theologically, socio-ethnically, and pragmatically. Please visit denverseminary.edu/VGI to learn more.
