138 PS 1103 Developing Lay Leaders: A Philosophy and Strategy for Leadership Training Students are exposed to a spectrum of leadership development theory and practice, including mentoring, developing spiritual gifts, understanding learning styles and adult learning strategies, and developing emotional intelligences. Various training models will be presented as well practical tools for creating more leadership density in the student's congregation. Three hours. PS 1104 Leading and Managing Congregations In this seminar, students will examine how people come together in congregations and how organizational processes, structures, and cultures impact and influence the effectiveness of churches and parachurches. Christian congregations are explored through several key frames or lenses to better understanding how these ministries currently function as well as the ways in which leaders can help them be healthier and function more efficiently. Three hours. SPIRITUAL FORMATION TRACK (REQUIRED) SF 1101 Biblical and Historical Foundations of Spiritual Formation This seminar explores the theory and practice of spiritual formation that is deeply rooted in Scripture and in the orthodox Christian tradition. Students learn to recover the treasures of the spiritual life that are hidden in the fields of Scripture and history and how these recovered treasures can powerfully shape their lives and ministries. Implications for life in the church and mission to the world will be discussed. Three hours. SF 1102 Theology of Transformation and the Spiritual Journey How people change is the core topic addressed in this seminar. Students examine biblical, historical, and contemporary models for transformational insights into their own journeys. Careful theological attention will be given to the nature and dimensions of the human person, how God relates to humanity, and to the transformative power of communion with the Triune God. Facilitating the journey of transformation in ecclesial settings is a major a theme of the seminar. Three hours. SF 1103 Ministry Effectiveness through Personal Growth in Christian Spirituality In this seminar students will explore the kind of spiritual development that leads to the joy and power of the Holy Spirit. Relevant scripture is discussed and historic models of spiritual life and nurture are considered. Major topics include experiencing heart-intimacy with God through a life of prayer, cultivating a contemplative lifestyle, and developing a rule of life that can lead to recovering the joy and power of the Spirit in personal life and leadership. Three hours. SF 1104 Spiritual Mentoring: The Ministry of Evangelical Soul Care This seminar explores the biblical and theological basis for spiritual mentoring or soul care. Students learn in both theory and practice how to walk with those who suffer, with those who are seeking discernment of God's will, with those whose image of God is distorted, with those who are stuck in immaturity or sin, and with those who have a desire to mature in their relationship with Jesus. Implementing soul care in a variety of ecclesial contexts is explored. Three hours. ELECTIVES (OPEN TO ALL DOCTORATE STUDENTS) EL 1201 Special Topics This course number is reserved for courses of special or one-time interest that do not otherwise appear in the catalog. Three hours.
