139 EL 1290 Individualized Study This course number is reserved for courses that are designed to free the student for independent investigation under the guidance of a professor. Three hours. LD 1201 Staying Alive as a Leader Students explore the premise that a leader's own personal journey of faith and his or her own continued growth in emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual health is the most critical component in responding to the challenging ministry realities in a rapidly changing world. What it means to be a leader of a mission shaped congregation and/or Christian organization is discussed as well as some of the seminal issues facing leaders and the communities they serve. Also considered are some of the personal attributes and ministry skills that are necessary to survive and thrive over time. Three hours. LD 1202 Integrating Spiritual and Leadership Principles In this seminar students reflect on how leadership and spiritual formation go together and are, in fact, not at odds with each other. Various ways that spiritual formation informs leadership are discussed and practical ways leadership can assist in the spiritual development of others are considered. Three hours. LD 1203 Leading Missional-Shaped Congregations Students are invited to construct missional church leadership strategies that are contextualized by their theological tradition and place of ministry. Spiritual gifts, strengths and skills are examined for leadership in a wide cross-section of church and staff sizes. Staff leadership is explored as a solo staff, or as lead staff with full, part-time, and volunteer leaders. Skill and spiritual gift development is emphasized. Seminar requirements engage students in creating a skill and gift development plan based on twenty-first century disciple-making, using reflective learning from course modules, required reading, gift 39inventories, on-site visit(s) and case studies. Three hours. MF 1201 Healthy Sexuality A foundational study of both healthy and maladaptive human sexuality, this course presents biological, psychological, sociological, theological, and familial perspectives. Topics include issues of gender and sexual functioning, sexual orientation, pornography, and sex therapy. Issues are approached from a biblical perspective, while alternative socio-cultural values and norms are also be discussed. Additional topics include sexual identity, sexual behavior, sexual disorders, sexual addictions, and resources for treatment. The seminar will help students address sexual issues that are relevant to the populations they work with to provide insights and understanding that will help students integrate biblical truth with the experiences of the individuals they work with. Three hours. MF 1202 Family Development and Intergenerational Ministry Developmental and systems theories are integrated with personality development across the life span with biblical perspectives. The massive impact of generational differences on family development is a core component of the course. Included are discussion of personal development and the development of the family system as a whole. Individual and family life cycle tasks and potential problems in each of the developmental stages are studied. Developmental issues such as diversity, trauma, sociological pressures, and contemporary family issues, including changing family forms and dynamics, are discussed. Issues related to assessment and intervention that is sensitive to the unique needs of clients are also considered. The integration of biblical and theological perspectives on family development is central to the course. Three hours.
