124 TH 502 Survey of Christian Doctrine II Continues the introduction of students to the grand narrative of Scripture—creation, fall, redemption, consummation—and to the study of theology by examining the work of Christ, the work of the Holy Spirit, salvation, the church, and last things The course presents and critiques alternate views, considers exegetical issues, helps students in developing their own theological views, and examines the relevance for life and ministry of each topic studied. Prerequisite: TH 501 Survey of Christian Doctrine I. Pre- or corequisite with TH 501 for MA (Theology). Offered fall and spring semesters. Two hours (MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling) or three hours (all other programs). TH 600 Research and Writing for Theology An introduction to the vocation of theological scholarship and to graduate-level research and writing in theology. Students will be introduced to principles and practices which will enable high quality research and writing in both academic and non-academic contexts. Students who will be taking the MA (Theology) comprehensive exam receive instruction and participate in course work appropriate to them, while those who plan to pursue a thesis will receive instruction and participate in course work appropriate to them. Required for MA (Theology) students and open to other students who are interested in theology. Offered fall and spring semesters. One hour. TH 610 Seminar in Theological Method Explores various approaches to the nature of the theological task, primarily in Protestant theology, but also in Roman Catholic theology. Attention is given to the formation and function of theology, especially in its relationship to Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience. Prerequisite: TH 501 Survey of Christian Doctrine I. Recommended prerequisite: TH 502 Survey of Christian Doctrine II. Offered spring semesters, odd years. Two hours. TH 615 Historical Theology This course provides an introduction to Christian theology as an historical phenomena and to major chapters in the history of theology. Through the study of both secondary resources and primary sources, students become acquainted with selected major theological topics, events and figures. Prerequisites: GS500 Thinking Biblically and Theologically and TH501 Survey of Christian Doctrine I. Pre- or corequisite: TH502 Survey of Christian Doctrine II. Two or three hours (MA[BTS] students must register for three credits.). TH 620 The Doctrine of God An examination of the doctrine of God with particular attention to the attributes of God and the doctrine of the Trinity. The doctrine of the Trinity will be explored in the context of the councils of the early church, the distinctives of the Eastern and Western traditions, and doctrinal developments through the late twentieth century. Consideration will also be given to contemporary controversies related to the doctrine of God. Prerequisite: TH 501 Survey of Christian Doctrine I. Recommended prerequisite: TH 502 Survey of Christian Doctrine II. Offered fall semesters, even years. Two hours. TH 622 Christology and Pneumatology Explores the person and work of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, especially in relation to creation and redemption. The development of Christological and pneumatological thought is traced from the early church and the councils to the present. Special attention will be given to significant Christological and pneumatological controversies throughout history. Prerequisites: TH 501 Survey of Christian Doctrine I; Pre- or corequisite: TH 502 Survey of Christian Doctrine II. Offered fall semesters, even years. Two or three hours.
