church. Upon arriving, Amanda Grace was greeted by barking dogs, people everywhere, and the stench of humanity consumed with fear. Amanda Grace led a team of volunteers with counseling experience throughout the crisis. "When you have a cross section of humanity like that, you have kids who are scared, adults off their medication, and everyone in a different phase of the grief cycle. We had to take care of them all," she recounted. "But for the next three days, the Holy Spirit carried me." "Harvey was the making of me, professionally and personally. After that, I felt assured in my gifts and skills in counseling." That one semester in which her path veered from the licensure program allowed her to take classes she could draw from in this crisis. "Harvey was the making of me, professionally and personally. After that, I felt assured in my gifts and skills in counseling." MORE TO COME Not long after Harvey, Amanda Grace was promoted to be the relationships director at her church, focusing on women's ministry and continuing in-house counseling. She shared a line from her favorite Mary Oliver poem to explain how the Lord used her time in seminary to prepare her for counseling: Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too, was a gift. Now, she invites others to rest in God's goodness and grace. "In the end, seminary was nothing I expected and everything I needed," she said. "My time in seminary boiled down to the word grace— my name—and freedom in Christ."
