4 SPRING 2018 NOTABLE News from the Denver Seminary community. F.Y.I. Dr. Randy MacFarland, Provost and Dean, Retires after 20+ Years of Service After serving Denver Seminary for over 20 years, Dr. Randy MacFarland, Denver Seminary's provost and dean, will retire in June 2018. Dr. MacFarland has served the Seminary in various capacities since he joined the faculty in 1997, starting as vice president of training and mentoring and associate professor of pastoral ministry and evangelism. In 2001 he became the vice president and dean, and in 2008 he transitioned to his current position as provost and dean. In this role, he serves as the chief administrative officer and chief academic officer of the Seminary. In each position, Dr. MacFarland has had a significant impact on the institution's mission in the world, its academic rigor, and its curriculum. He has also indelibly impacted the student body, faculty, and staff. As an alumnus of the Master of Divinity Program at Denver Seminary, Dr. MacFarland is rooted in the institution's history and academia, and his expertise, wisdom, and pastoral care will be greatly missed. Dr. MacFarland's influence spanned all aspects and audiences of the Seminary. Denver Seminary alumnus James Owen reflects on his time with Dr. MacFarland: As a mentor, Dr. MacFarland brought tremendous wisdom to our meetings, and he applied it with uncommon gentleness and humility. He shepherded me through seminary and beyond with the compassion of a pastor and the erudition of a scholar. I can confidently say that I would not be in ministry today were it not for the work that God did through Dr. MacFarland during that time. Dr. MacFarland embodies so many of the virtues of a Christian leader: tireless commitment to service, encyclopedic biblical and theological knowledge, and genuine care for God's people. More than anything, his example speaks loudly and clearly. I hope to imitate him in life and ministry. The Seminary is deeply grateful for Dr. MacFarland's dedicated service to the institution. We pray God's blessing over him in his next season of life. "Randy MacFarland has left a deep imprint on the life and culture of Denver Seminary. His selfless and courageous leadership has allowed the Seminary to thrive through the highs and lows of the past 20 years. I've never worked with a leader more trusted and loved by those who serve alongside him." – Dr. Mark Young, President Remembering Dr. Edward Hayes Denver Seminary's fourth president, Dr. Edward L. Hayes, passed away on November 20, 2017. Though Dr. Hayes served as the Seminary president from 1993 to 1996, his tenure and contribution to the Seminary lasted for over 20 years. He served in the role of professor of Christian education from 1960 to 1979 and as academic dean for several of his years while on faculty. Dr. Doug Groothuis, professor of philosophy, noted, "Dr. Hayes was a prayerful man who deeply loved Denver Seminary. Let us thank our God for this faithful man."
