2019-2020 Student Handbook 57 The DMin degree is different from the PhD degree in its emphasis on direct application to professional practice. Learnings must be integrated into the life and ministry of the student. The DMin degree does not neglect research, as one must know what to apply before application can be made. It is research associated with practice and requires competence at the doctoral level in both research and application (professional and personal). This emphasis upon application and integration is reflected in the course papers and thesis. Orientation All students entering the DMin program must participate in online orientation prior to the first seminar. The orientation will include information on the administrative and academic aspects of the program. Doctoral Thesis Tuition and Fees Students must register for DT1101 Thesis the semester following their last seminar. Tuition for this 4-credit- hour course follows normal registration and payment deadlines. Following DT1101, students must register each subsequent semester for DT1102 Thesis Continuation until the semester they intend to graduate, or until the program limit expires (whichever occurs first). This is a no-credit course code and generates a fee equal to one hour of tuition each semester the student registers for DT1102. Program Extension If a student has not finished the thesis by the end of the program limit, the student must request a program extension. If granted, the student will register for DT1103 Thesis Extended Continuation for each subsequent semester until the semester in which the student intends to graduate. Like DT1102, this is also a no-credit course code with the above-noted fee. In the final semester of a student's program, the student registers for DT1104 Thesis Completion. This 3-credit course follows standard registration and tuition procedures. NOTE: Students may choose to register for the final three credit hours, and pay that tuition, the semester prior to graduation in which the thesis is completed and defended. In such cases, the student will register for DT1104 the semester of the oral defense and for DT1102 or DT1103 the final semester in which the final thesis, with revisions, is submitted and graduation occurs. There should not be any semester between the student's last seminar and graduation in which the student is not registered. Failure to register for DT1101, DT1102, DT1103, or DT1104 as appropriate will result in a late registration fee and automatic registration by the registrar's office. Inter-Library Loans for DMin Students The library is committed to helping students in every way possible. However, the library staff will typically decline to fill Inter Library Loan (ILL) requests for non-local DMin students because students can often use their local library's ILL program with less cost (in time and money, especially postage) for all parties involved. An item may be available from a library closer to the requesting student's home library. Also, if a library book is lost in transit back to the Seminary library, the student is responsible for its full dollar replacement which could easily run into hundreds of dollars.
