6 ENGAGING IN SOLUTIONS TO MEET TODAY'S CHALLENGES A SNAPSHOT FROM 2018-19 BLACKS IN THEOLOGY From February 4-8, 2019, Denver Seminary hosted our inaugural Blacks in Theology celebration, a week honoring black theologians of today —those shaping our culture today, and those who will lead in the future. The week included a dramatic presentation of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a conversation with local pastors, and a video presentation of Backs Against the Wall: The Howard Thurman Story. The video was also shown at the Washington DC extension as part of the Urban Initiative. The week's events culminated with a Blacks in Theology Gala, to establish the Black Student Fellowship Endowed Scholarship. The 2020 Blacks in Theology week will run February 3-7, closing with the second annual gala. This year's Blacks in Theology theme is Rise to the Occasion, and will speak to the challenges black theologians have faced, the barriers they have overcome, and, most importantly, how they have risen to achieve great things and how they will continue to rise in the future. WASHINGTON DC GRADUATES Denver Seminary's Washington DC extension graduated its first students in spring 2019. Pamela Creekmur graduated with an MA in Leaderership. Tonya McCullough was conferred with a graduate certificate in Biblical and Theological Studies. GORDON MACDONALD, CHANCELLOR, RETIRES Denver Seminary honored Gordon and Gail MacDonald as they retired, in May 2019. Gordon served as chancellor to the Seminary since 2011. As chancellor, Gordon served as an ambassador for the Seminary to advance its reach and reputation. Together, he and Gail were faithful mentors to students and provided pastoral care for the faculty. We are grateful for their steadfast commitment to Denver Seminary. 4
