4 SPRING 2014 News Worthy Partnership, Initiative, and Alliance Langham Scholar Welcomed to Campus In cooperation with the Langham Partnership, Denver Seminary has the privilege of hosting Adam Szumorek, a Polish national and doctoral candidate at Spurgeon's College in London, while he engages in research on his dissertation. His topic is the use of biblical imagery in preaching. Dr. Scott Wenig will be his sponsor while on campus. Hosting an international scholar allows the Seminary to extend its ministry beyond our own educational programs. The Seminary's library is a valuable resource for academic research. The convenience of living on campus will allow Adam the opportunity to observe seminary classes, engage in collegial interactions with professors, students, and administrators, and experience a broad array of campus activities and events. Denver Seminary is honored to play a significant role in the development of international scholars like Adam Szumorek. Launch of Denver Seminary's Preaching Initiative The Preaching Initiative, funded by a three-year grant from the Lilly Foundation, will launch in the fall of this year. Through this grant, the Seminary will be able to place an increased emphasis on expository preaching for both current students and pastors. The Initiative includes creating new course electives in homiletics, establishing an annual preaching conference that exemplifies outstanding preaching, and forming preaching cluster groups where participants will have the opportunity to hone their preaching skills in a small relational setting under the guidance of an experienced facilitator. In addition, the Preaching Initiative includes a special focus on reaching those who may not have access to a seminary education, particularly pastors in ethnically diverse and ethnic minority settings. The core instruction will emphasize big-idea expository preaching, although special topics will also be included, such as how to preach with evangelism in mind. For more information, contact Perry Marshall, the Preaching Initiative program director at perry.marshall@denverseminary.edu or 719.494.4940. Founding Partner of the Seminary Stewardship Alliance Denver Seminary is proud to be a founding partner of the Seminary Stewardship Alliance, a consortium of schools dedicated to reconnecting seminaries with the biblical call to care for God's creation. In April 2012, President Mark Young, along with leaders from twelve other seminaries gathered in Washington D.C. on Earth Day to form the Alliance. Today, a total of twenty-three schools are participating with the goal of teaching, preaching, and living good stewardship practices. Drs. David Buschart and Brad Widstrom are the Seminary's liaisons to the association. After receiving a seed grant of $2,000 from the Seminary Stewardship Alliance, Widstrom and Buschart are working along with the campus facilities department to have water bottle filling stations installed on campus. This is an effort to reduce the number of disposable water bottles used and encourage better water-stewardship on campus. The first station was installed in February. According to Widstrom "Our hope is that the bottle filling stations will not only cut down on the multiple negative environmental impacts caused by disposable water NOTABLE News from the Denver Seminary community. F.Y.I. Christian Thought Colloquium During the fall Christian Thought Colloquium, alumnus Steve Duby (MDiv, 2010) presented a paper on the topic "Does God Suffer with Us?" Steve is a PhD candidate at St. Andrew's University in Scotland and is currently finishing his dissertation, "Divine Simplicity: A Dogmatic Account," which he will defend this spring. The spring Colloquium, held on March 12, was hosted by alumna Kristy Whaley (MA, 2011). She presented on the topic "How can the World be Saved?: A Look at Augustine's Theology of Redemption Through Modern Literature."
