132 TM 605 Mentored Formation Elective An elective course in training and mentoring for those who wish to go beyond the completion of their required TM courses. In collaboration with a mentoring director, students will discern, develop and manage a personalized learning plan focused towards the practice of a professional skill in a professional context. The students are required to utilize cognitive, experiential, and relational learning practices, some of which are familiar and others that uniquely challenge their learning style. These practices involve the engagement of a self-selected mentor for a minimum of 10 hours each semester. The intended outcome of the semester is to strengthen a student's capacity for life-long learning so that whole person formation continues post-seminary. Prerequisite: Professor permission. One hour. YOUTH AND FAMILY STUDIES Denver Seminary is committed to developing leaders who have both the vision and training necessary for penetrating the contemporary culture. As this culture changes at a rapid rate, the seminary experience is designed to equip students with the theological, sociological, and pragmatic tools necessary to develop their own programs to meet the demands inherent within their local adolescent context. Relying on biblical truth supplemented by social science research, the youth and families studies department seeks to enable every student to be effective in lifelong engagement in their specific place of calling. YFS 501 Foundations of Youth and Family Studies A theological, sociological, philosophical and historical overview of ministry to adolescents and their families. Offered fall semesters. Three hours. YFS 502 Leadership in Youth and Family Ministry This course is designed to teach the philosophies, roles, responsibilities, and activities of Christian leadership within any youth and family ministry context. There is a strong emphasis on critical thinking and practical application of a wide variety of leadership concepts. Offered spring semesters. Three hours. YFS 550 Contemporary Family Issues Introduction to the biblical and psychological foundations of family and family relationships. Various models for serving adolescents and their families will be explored. Two hours. YFS 601 Evangelism and Discipleship in Adolescent Culture This course practically explores the biblical mandate to "go and make disciples" especially as it relates to contemporary adolescent culture and emerging generations. It reviews the theology and principles of evangelism and discipleship, and investigates various evangelistic and discipleship methods and their contextual effectiveness. Offered fall semesters. Two hours. YFS 602 Transformational Communication This course assists students in learning how to speak to youth in a way that will captivate and effectively communicate the biblical text, lead relevant life-changing Bible based discussions, and engage a postmodern audience through narrative story telling. Offered fall semesters. Two hours. YFS 605 Youth in Crisis A practical overview of adolescent crisis and risk issues and appropriate responses. Special focus is given to marginalized and at-risk youth. Offered spring semesters. Two hours.
