2016-2017 Student Handbook 59 Orientation All students entering the D.Min. program must attend an orientation session the first time they are on campus for a seminar(s). The orientation will include information on the administrative and academic aspects of the program and provide an opportunity for questions, beginning a dialog which will continue throughout the program. In-Ministry Requirement Since the D.Min. is an applicational degree, students must already be in ministry to enter the program and remain in ministry throughout the program. Ministry provides the context for integrative application for what is learned. Also, students must have been in ministry for at least three years subsequent to their Master of Divinity degree (or other master's degree) before entering the D.Min. program. One must have sufficient experience in ministry to understand how the course work is applicable to the ministry in which one is engaged. Those in tent-making ministries can be accepted into the program, but must give evidence that their secular work is intended to make ministry possible. Time Limit for Total Program It is expected that students will complete the entire doctoral program within five years of attending their first seminar. Students who find that circumstances make it necessary to take a longer period of time may petition the D.Min. Committee to present their reasons justifying an extension. Should permission be granted, students will pay a continuation fee as stated in the Financial Policies section. Students granted a program extension must demonstrate clear progress (as defined on the Moodle/DMin Project Students site) each semester in order to continue with the extension. Petition for an Extension When extenuating circumstances make it impossible for doctoral students to adhere to the time limitations listed above, a petition for a program extension may be submitted to the D.Min. Committee. The petition must include an explanation of the reasons for the request. There will be agreement at that point on a time frame for the completion of the program. A continuing education fee must be paid by students for each session of the agreed upon extension. Seminar Information Minimum Number of Students Required for a Seminar The minimum enrollment for seminars is five students. If a seminar is canceled because of low enrollment, students will be notified within a few days of the final registration (add) deadline. The D.Min. office will assist students in registering for another course. Do not book airline tickets until you know the seminar will be conducted.
